SIXTEENTH ANNUAL COMMUNITY
RECOGNITION DINNER & AWARDS
Each year, SullivanArc pays tribute to those who have made a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year’s Community Recognition Dinner drew more than 160 guests who came to honor some very special people who have made an impact in the field of human services, in our community, and in the lives of the people we serve.
The recipient of the 2007 Ruth Bennett Humanitarian Award was Joseph A. Todora, MSW, LMSW, Director of the Sullivan County Department of Community Services. This award is presented annually in memory of one of the founding members of our agency, Ruth Bennett, who is an integral part of our history and who served as a tireless campaigner for the rights of the developmentally disabled. In selecting a recipient for this prestigious award, the committee looks to the ideals and principles of its namesake. Over the years, Joseph Todora has partnered with our agency to help SullivanArc build and expand programs and services that are accessible, responsive and most beneficial to the needs of Sullivan County residents with disabilities.
Louise Oles of Goshen, New York, a long-standing member of the SullivanArc Board of Directors, received the 2007 Service Award, which is given to individuals who have given freely of their time and talents in service to our agency. Mrs. Oles was recognized for her steadfast commitment to SullivanArc and her unwavering support of our mission as a member of the Board, as a parent, and as an advocate for the disabled.
The Employer of the Year Award recognizes a business that has provided equal, competitive employment opportunities to people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Majestic Drug Company of South Fallsburg, and owner Larry Fishman, were presented with this award in acknowledgement of the ongoing support Majestic Drug Company has provided to SullivanArc consumers by offering them exceptional employment opportunities.
The Derrick Finn Memorial Award, introduced in 2005 to honor the memory of Derrick Finn, a SullivanArc consumer and world class Special Olympian, recognizes excellence in athletics or the arts, as well as community service. This year the award was presented to Jermaine Edie, a SullivanArc Consumer and Sullivan Industries employee, who recently won the Go for the Gold medal from the Special Olympics Regional Office for his record-breaking weight lifts at the summer games. Jermaine is also an active member of a local dance studio and has won several awards for dance. He is community-minded, team-oriented and continually strives to advance himself.
Geraldine Williams was recognized with a NYSID Joslin Award, which acknowledges outstanding job performance and personal success by people with disabilities who are employed on NYSID preferred source contracts. Unfortunately, Geraldine was unable to attend the dinner, but Lisa LaGrange, Program Director for Supported Employment and Sullivan Industries spoke of her accomplishments and presented her award, which was graciously accepted by Terry Grafmuller on her behalf.
It was a privilege for SullivanArc to host the 2007 Community Recognition Awards and pay tribute to such extraordinary individuals. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees!
